Why is Velocity Investments on my credit report?

Velocity Investments is a “debt buyer.” That means it buys old, “charged-off” consumer debt, then tries to collect on that debt for profit. If Velocity purchased your debt, then it may appear on your credit report. Velocity usually appears on your credit report when:

  • Velocity bought your debt: As stated above, Velocity buys consumer debt. Once it owns your debt, it likely will report your debt to credit reporting agencies.
  • Velocity is trying to collect a debt from you: Velocity attempts to collect on the debt it purchases. It usually reports old debt to credit reporting agencies to aid in its debt collection activities.
  • Velocity got a judgment against you: Velocity sues thousands of people each year. It obtains judgments against many of them. It can report information on you if it obtained a judgment against you.

Is Velocity Investments on my credit report in error?

Although Velocity Investments may accurately appear on your credit report, it also may appear on your credit report in error. Common errors include the following situations:

  • You don't owe the debt: If you don't recognize a debt on your credit report, that debt may be reported in error.
  • Your debt is old: Most accounts can't be reported on your credit report after seven to eight years.
  • Discharged debt is reported improperly: When a debt is discharged through bankruptcy, settlement, or litigation, the account status must be updated, or the account must be removed entirely.
  • Debt is reported more than once: Debt buyers can't report a single account as multiple accounts.
  • Inaccurate information is reported after a dispute: Debt buyers can't re-report information about an account that was previously found to be inaccurate.

This is called a “mixed file” error. These types of credit report errors often are mistaken for identity theft. Second, you may be a victim of identity theft.
